What they say
I started with JMQB in 2008 as a foreman joiner working throughout the Highlands. My position within JMQB progressed and I am now Site Agent for an R.House housing development in Montrose Woods, Auldearn.
My role involves project management for the new-build houses at Montrose Woods, liaising with sub-contractors daily and managing a team of twenty JMQB employees.
I have gained several construction qualifications during my time with JMQB such as CITB site safety plus, as well as completing first aid training, machinery tickets for driving forklifts and dumpers, scaffolding tickets and fire safety training.
My favourite part of the job is watching the houses develop through different stages of the build until the house is complete and ready to hand over to people moving into their new homes at Montrose Woods.
John Angus Gate
I've worked with JMQB for nearly 11 years now. I began working as an apprentice bricklayer at projects across the Highlands. I served my time and qualified and over the years my role continued to develop to where I am now responsible for all Health and Safety at JMQB and oversee operations for all builds in the Skye area.
Working with JMQB has allowed me to develop my skills enormously. I have managed large scale projects such as the Mcandie Court Development in Fort William and the construction of 8 flats on Dunvegan Road, Portree, Skye.
The most enjoyable part of my job is watching and being part of the company's expansion.
I have worked for JMQB for coming up 4 years, starting my apprenticeship in October 2013.
In that time my role has developed a lot. When I first started off I was in the manufacturing facility in Crossal for a short spell, building house kits and seeing how that side of the work was done. I then went on to site work, erecting R.Houses and working on the inside and outside of the houses which I enjoy a lot. Over the years I've gained more and more confidence and now have the responsibilities of carrying out and completing tasks myself.
I have gained qualifications over my apprenticeship i.e. I now have my fork lift tickets, over-head crane tickets, abrasive wheels, slingers ticket, health and safety and working at heights.
The great thing about my job is it is so varied. I like getting the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques. I also enjoy working away from Skye as it gives me the chance to see different places and different sites.
